Things to Do in the Florida Keys

Located off the southern tip of Florida, the Florida Keys are a beautiful string of islands that offer sandy beaches, luxurious resorts, and marine life attractions to vacation goers year-round.

If you are looking to take a vacation to Florida but want to get away from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Orlando or Miami, taking the famous Seven Mile Bridge to the Keys is a great option. Many attractions in the Keys are centered around water, as the Keys are home to some of the state’s most beautiful beaches and unique wildlife. Here are a few of the best things for any tourist to do during their time in the Florida Keys.

Duval Street

Known for its museums, galleries, and cafes, Duval Street is known for being one of Key West’s most historical areas. Duval Street is home to numerous souvenir shops for tourists looking to take a little piece of the Keys home with them, and events such as costume parties and parades throughout the year.

Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park is one of Florida’s most underrated attractions and is home to what many consider to be the best and most beautiful beach in the state. The park has two separate beach areas; one directly faces the open ocean, while another small area looks across to an old railroad bridge. Both views are great! In addition, the park offers activities like snorkeling and boat tours, as well as a large campsite.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary are both home to the Keys’ famous wildlife. This is a popular spot for snorkelers and divers, who are able to swim with underwater inhabitants and take a closer look at their natural marine environments.

Both spots are located in Key Largo, the longest of the Florida Keys and possibly the most well known for aquatic activities.

Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

If aquatic animals aren’t your thing, try getting up close and personal with nature at the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, a glass-enclosed habitat where over 60 species of butterfly roam freely. Located on Duval Street, the conservatory is also home to a Learning Center where guests can learn about the butterfly life cycle and a gift shop where tourists can pick up one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Marathon

Marathon is a dream vacation destination for fisherman and watersport enthusiasts alike. Known as the commercial and sports fishing capital of the Keys, Marathon is also home to gorgeous beaches that offer activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, and jet skiing. Marathon is a great destination for vacation lovers to retire, with many retired individuals purchasing homes, building docks, and enjoying the fishing and aquatic adventures marathon offers year round. If you happen to fall into this category, visit rapidpermits.com for information on securing permits for your dock or other projects quickly.

Often overlooked by tourists in favor of overpriced attractions in crowded cities like Orlando or Miami, The Florida Keys are home to some of the most beautiful beaches and exotic wildlife in the country. The Keys have activities that are sure to please visitors of all ages, and should be a top choice for your next vacation!
