Marketing can be a strange thing sometimes. There’s a lot you’re supposed to do. You’re supposed to be prominent in the public. You’re supposed to mix promotion with building trust. However, people don’t talk about what you’re not supposed to do. There are things that you should definitely avoid when it comes to marketing. They’re not always obvious, but they exist

The problem with this is that a lot of businesses don’t know what to avoid. Obviously, this can present a problem. You don’t want to make a stupid mistake and lose out. To try and help with this, we’re going to be looking at what to avoid. We’ll count down the top mistakes you should not make.

Not Self-Promoting

This is one of the worst things that you can do as a business. Some companies avoid promotion because they don’t feel confident enough. They think that customers will reject their goods. That they’ll turn their backs on them for daring to promote. However, this is simply not true. If you have a great product, talk about it! Make sure people know that it’s good. That they know that you’re a company to buy from. If you’ve built up trust in your audience, promotion is fine. People will expect you to promote. You are a business after all. You need to promote, otherwise what’s the point of an online presence? It’s just about having the confidence to promote, and the will to act.

Disregarding SEO

SEO is one of your best friend. If you’re going to market, you need to think about SEO. However, that’s where a lot of companies fall short. They ignore SEO, and pass up a valuable tool. Search engine optimization is exactly what you think it is. The keywords and phrases you use are of great importance. They’ll get you ranked highly on the search engines.

Google is especially fond of keywords and uses them everywhere. And let’s be real, who’s bigger than Google? Make sure you take the time to get your keywords right. This is of the utmost importance for anyone who’s marketing. You need to make sure that the keywords are woven into your content. They can be on your website, or on your blog. In fact, it’s wise to use them in both places. You’ll be kicking yourself if you could have used SEO from the beginning.

No Blog

Not having a blog is a huge mistake. It’s free promotion – what more do you want? Blogs are an excellent resource for any company to work with. You use them to talk about a whole host of things. You can refer to the news in the industry. You can speak of helpful tips and tricks. You can offer advice, or promote a product. There’s so much that a blog can do. But so many businesses don’t have one. They view it as too much work for not enough reward. And the truth is, they are all dead wrong. Don’t be one of those companies, get a blog.

Ignoring Web Directories

This is pretty foolish. Promotion via web directories is bread and butter for any kind of business. It’s one of the basic places to put yourself. Think about it like this. A giant, virtual phone book. People can use it to find companies, services, goods. There are thousands of different companies on them. Why wouldn’t you want to be there too?

You can register for a lot of directories all at once. And this will help you join the lists. People will see your business when they are searching. They’ll go and look at your site. That’s easy traffic and potential customers. You’d have to be mad to pass that up. Smaller businesses especially should always consider web directories. It’s easy promotion for barely any cost. You don’t want to get arrogant when you have a company. It’s stupid to think you’ll promote without as many channels as possible.

Overall, these are just a few mistakes you should avoid. You don’t want to mess up when it comes to marketing. It’s an integral part of your business. Marketing generates customers and clients. And they’re what pay your bills and staff. Therefore, you can’t disregard any potential marketing tools. However, people keep making the same fundamental mistakes.

They keep forgetting all of these simple tools. But then they wonder why they’re not getting the traffic. Why the business is failing. Crazy, right? Never forget the little things. They’re so important, and you need to see that. Always take advantage of what’s available. Consider every possible option for your business. How can you promote? Is there anything more you can do? Nothing is too much effort. Not when the company is at stake. Not when you can push even further and succeed.
