What exactly is a newsletter? A newsletter is a periodical that comes out on a frequent basis that talks about a specific topic that is an interest to the people who read it. Newsletters come through the postal service on paper. They can also come through an E-mail being called an e-newsletter.

Many churches put out newsletters to their parishioners detailing meeting times, people that might be sick, good thing that happen in some member’s lives, the financial situation of the church and other information members of that church need. Clubs also distribute newsletters that give the same type of information and may have some informational articles on what ever the club is about. A garden club may add some articles on how to grow herbs or how to keep a compost bin. A business may do two types of newsletter. One is for the employees letting them know events and what is going on in the business and the other one is to the people that patronize the business telling them of new things that are happening at the business.

There are even family newsletters that keep large families up to date with what others are doing. They will publish pertinent information about other family members like graduations, births, marriages, deaths and successes. They may let all the family members know where and when the next family reunion will take place. They can publish a favorite recipe that has come down through the family. A newsletter communicates reliable information for all family members.

Newsletters are short and to the point. Usually a newsletter is no bigger than a few pages. It is usually attractive and contains pictures to catch the eye of the reader but does not have to. Highlights are placed in a specific area so one can tell what is going on in a glance. There should be information about members that subscribe and any events in which they can take part. Anything good that has happened to the organization or members should be placed into a newsletter as well as health status of members.

In most cases there is an editor for the newsletter. This editor may or may not write stories for the publication and there should be several other writers that produce material to put into the newsletter. The editor has the responsibility of choosing what can go into a newsletter or give the writers ideas on what they should write about. If the newsletter is for a society or business the editor should be an elected or appointed official that has communication with other officials within the organization.

There are newsletters that may promote a product. The manufacturer or seller of the product can produce a newsletter to give subscribers pertinent information on changes in the product or new things that come out related to the product. They can give practical information on using the product and can sell other related items.

Newsletters usually come out in a predetermined amount of time. It can be yearly, quarterly, monthly or weekly depending on the organization. Weekly newsletters are very hard to do because new information has to be written on a continuous basis to keep up with it. It is more practical to do a monthly or quarterly newsletter so that subscribers will not get bored or forget about the topic all together.

A newsletter and newspaper are totally different things. Newspaper articles are objective and impart both sides of an issue. A newsletter will only impart the positive side. Everything has to be written so that it compliments the subject. It can inform members of deaths or illnesses but most things are in a positive light. Newsletters are propaganda for the issue they support.

Other publications like magazines and newspapers do stories on a variety of subjects while newsletters single out one interest and do stories only on that interest. Magazines and newspapers are written for a general public while newsletters are written for a specific group of people with an interest in common. Generally no one makes much money from a newsletter by itself. If they do make money it is from the products sold from the newsletter while magazines and newspapers are a for profit business. You can find newsletters on just about any subject from Christmas and other Holidays to fixing cars or fishing. Gardening is a popular newsletter subject as is cooking. Your local garden club or PTA may put out a monthly newsletter and the company you work for might put one out just so you get to know what is going on in the company or who is coming and going. Newsletters are a great way to communicate with others who have a similar interest.
