There was a time when Yahoo was the number one search engine for internet users, unfortunately, for Yahoo, that is no longer the case. Yahoo is no longer considered one of the technology leaders for internet search engines or tools, and the company's reputation is nowhere near where it used to be. Yahoo believes that one of the biggest reasons for their decline is the fact that the company changed its focus several years ago, from focusing on the technical aspects of their existing products, to focusing more on new media related products. Yahoo is now re committed to improving the technology behind their search engine and other tools, which is evidenced by the sale of many of their media products to Microsoft.

Microsoft has actually tried to acquire Yahoo, and for a while it did seem like Yahoo would be willing to agree to a merger, but in the end the Yahoo Board of Directors refused Microsoft’s bid for the company. Now the company is turning its attention back to their search engine, which was the driving force in getting the company to where it is today.

Yahoo has publicly stated that they are now working on developing new tools, that will provide ground breaking functionality for their users. Yahoo is also focused on a re-design of their search engine, hoping that they will be able to provide the most relevant search results of any of the major search engines available today. The problem with focusing on improving their search engine, though, is that Microsoft and Google are also continuing to improve their search engine, to achieve the same results.

Yahoo thinks they have an advantage over Microsoft and Google, since they will be providing a long tail for each search, providing relevant information to users based on classifications of products, places and individuals. Yahoo believes that this strategy will help to optimize their search results by only providing relevant information. The more they can limit search results to the most relevant content only, the more Yahoo feels they will be able to succeed in reclaiming the title of the most used search engine.

Yahoo has a long road ahead of them. It will be difficult to cut into the market share currently held by Google and Microsoft, and the longer it takes for Yahoo to make their search engine changes, the more difficult this task will become. Yahoo has big plans to once again be one of the major players when it comes to internet searching and other tools, but whether or not they can achieve these goals remains to be seen.
