Laptop and notebook computers are operated by regular hard drive software. Net books differ slightly as some models may have no hard drive at all and rely on solid state drives to perform tasks. A solid state drive is a data storage device that uses solid state memory to store data with the intention of providing access in the same style as a traditional hard disc drive.
Solid state drives differ from more traditional hard discs and magnetic discs in that they use micro chips that retain data in memory chips and have no moving parts. Regular hard drives are electromechanical devices containing moving spinning discs and movable reading and writing heads. Solid state drives are less sensitive to shock, are silent, and have lower access time, but are more expensive per gigabyte. SSDs use the same interface as hard drives, resulting in them being easily replaced in most applications.
The key components of SSDs are the controller and the memory to store the data. The main memory content of the SSD had been DRAM volatile memory from when cheap net books first developed. However, since 2009, NAND flash non volatile memory has been more commonly used. There are other components that play a role in SSD operation, but memory and storage are the most prevalent. Most SSD manufacturers use non volatile NAND flash memory in the construction of their SSDs because of the low cost compared to DRAM and the ability to retain data without a constant power supply. Flash memory based solutions are normally packaged in standard disc drive form factors, or smaller and compact layouts because of the layout memory.
Until 2009, SSDs were mostly used in applications where the speed of the storage system needed to be as fast as possible. Since flash memory has become a common component of SSDs, the falling prices and increased identities have made it financially attractive for many other applications contributing to the overall appeal of cheap netbooks. Organizations that can benefit from faster access of system data include equity trading companies, telecommunications corporations, streaming media and vetting editing companies. The list of applications that could benefit from faster storage is huge. Any company can access the ROI from adding SSDs to their own applications to best understand if that will be cost effective for them.
