5 Tips for Opening Your Own Bar

Starting a bar involves more than just renting a building and tossing together some drinks. If you’re serious about succeeding as a bar owner, here are just five things to keep in mind before you hang a “now open” sign.
1. Get Your Liquor License

This should be one of your first steps when opening a bar. You can’t sell alcoholic drinks without permission from the state! Don’t put it off until the last minute, either; it can take weeks for the paperwork to go through, and you don’t want to be forced to delay your grand opening. If you’re looking to obtain your alcohol license Dallas TX, give yourself at least 6-8 weeks to get it done.
2. Plan Your Menu

You’ll need to figure out which drinks to serve, of course, but pay attention to your food menu as well. Most of your customers will only drink a beer or two while watching the game or socializing with friends, and they’ll need real food to go with their evening out. Think about things like burgers, nachos, chicken wings and maybe even house salads.
3. Pick A Few Methods of Entertainment

Most bars have at least one television on the premises, but if you’re unable or unwilling to play ESPN all night, there are other ways that you might entertain your patrons. For example, a pool table is always fun. Darts are another possibility. If you have the space, you can even install a karaoke stage for rowdy nights of booze and song.
4. Hire the Right Staff

Bars can live and die by the skill of their bartenders, so don’t hire random people off the street. Look for talented and experienced employees who really know how to mix their drinks. You’ll also want to put some effort into vetting your waitresses, hostesses, busboys and dishwashers; you don’t want any thefts on your property. Last but certainly not least, hire a cook who knows their way around a kitchen.
5. Make It Unique

What makes your bar different from every other bar? Do you have a particular theme or decor, or do you serve special food or drink? Put these things in the center of your advertising efforts. Make yourself stand out from the crowd by fulfilling a personal niche.
These are just a few tips for opening your own bar. Bottoms up!
