5 Major Qualities to Look For in a Tactical Flashlight

The best tactical flashlight is going to be reliable and lightweight. We’re sharing 5 other major qualities to look for in a tactical flashlight here.

A tactical flashlight can be a lifesaver in a variety of situations, but it pays to have the very best. Of course, you want a flashlight to be reliable and lightweight so you can carry it discreetly and count on it to be ready when you need it.

That’s not all you need to look for, though. Other essential qualities make some tactical flashlights stand above the rest. Here are five things to look for.

Uses a Common Battery Size

Flashlight battery type isn’t something you typically think about, but it can cause a lot of headaches if you have a tactical flashlight that uses unusual batteries. The best are AAA or AA batteries because you can get those almost anywhere. There’s also a good chance that you can barter for or borrow the batteries if you need them, as most people have those types at home.

A flashlight that uses a 9-volt or another type of battery is harder to maintain, and it can be hard to find replacements if you don’t have a well-stocked store nearby.

Simple to Operate

There are many fancy flashlights with multiple settings and options. Some are even computer programmable. While those kinds of flashlights may be fun and impressive, over the long-term, they aren’t the best choice.

First, fancy flashlights have a lot of features you simply don’t need most of the time, especially when you’re in a survival situation. Secondly, a large number of features translates to a shorter battery life, and keeping the flashlight running is vital. Finally, elaborate options mean more opportunity for the light to malfunction.

Instead, keep it simple.

Reliable Operation

Twist-on or click on? No matter which you choose, it needs to be dependable and easy to use. There will be times when you need to turn on your flashlight very quickly, and having to fiddle to find the buttons or remember how to turn it on will cost you valuable time.

A simple, reliable on-off operation is vital for tactical flashlights.

High-Quality Construction

When you’re choosing a tactical flashlight, there are several elements to look for to ensure you have a high-quality product. First, ensure that the bulb is fairly well protected and can’t easily break. Check that the flashlight is shock resistant and water resistant – waterproof is even better!

Also, make sure that the flashlight won’t accidently turn on while in your pack or pocket. Having a flashlight burn through batteries when you’re not using it means it won’t be available when it gets dark, which is a major hassle, especially if you don’t have many spare batteries.

LED Light

Finally, choose a tactical flashlight that uses a LED light. An incandescent or another type of bulb is simply not built for long-term usefulness or a survival situation. Those kinds of bulbs can easily break if jarred or dropped and don’t have the life of a LED bulb.

LEDs have between 5,000 – 10,000 hours of use, which is pretty close to “forever” in most situations. LEDs are now made in brightness levels that rival any other bulb, and you can certainly find one that will be bright enough for day to day needs.

Don’t buy just any flashlight that’s labeled “tactical.” Instead, do a bit of research and make sure that these five qualities are present in any flashlight you consider. Then, look at reviews and consider how you’ll use the light to make your final decision.
